How do I clean a lacquered wood table?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth to prevent scratching the polished coating. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, moisture, and direct sunlight, which can degrade old resin layers. Maintain stable indoor humidity to protect the underlying timber from expanding or contracting beneath the rigid lacquer finish.

Are these tables suitable for daily use?

Most occasional, coffee, and side tables function well for everyday placement of lightweight items. Use coasters and protective pads to shield the decorative surface from heat and condensation. Heavier items or constant rough treatment can chip older lacquer, so placement in lower-traffic areas preserves the finish.

How do I tell Chinese from Japanese pieces?

Chinese pieces often feature deep red or black grounds with Chinoiserie landscapes or elm framing rooted in traditional domestic forms. Japanese items from the Meiji period frequently display precise gold hiramaki-e work and distinct pictorial subjects. Examining the construction methods and regional decorative motifs helps clarify the origin of each piece.

What is a nest of lacquered tables?

A nest comprises four or three graduated tables built to slide together into the footprint of the largest single stand. They served as versatile tea or occasional tables in nineteenth-century drawing rooms. Their modular design allowed hosts to deploy surfaces around a room as needed before stacking them compactly away.
