How do I operate the burner?

The burner uses thumbwheels to raise and lower the wicks within the gallery. Trimming the wick straight ensures an even flame. Extinguishing the light involves turning the wheel down until the flame dies or using an integrated snuffer if fitted.

What fuels are safe to use?

Modern paraffin or specifically formulated lamp oil suitable for wick burners works best in these reservoirs. Clear, refined oils prevent excessive soot build-up. Avoid heavier machine oils or scented garden torch fuels that damage internal metal components and produce heavy smoke.

How are glass shades secured?

Screws on the burner gallery tighten gently against the lower fitter rim of the glass shade. Care is necessary not to overtighten and crack the glass. Some larger shades rest directly inside a supporting brass ring without individual thumbscrews.

How should brass be cleaned?

Gentle wiping with a soft, dry cloth removes ordinary dust without disturbing the aged patina. Harsh abrasive polishes strip away historical surface character. Specialist non-abrasive metal cleaners clear heavy tarnish if restoration is required, though many collectors prefer unpolished surfaces.
