How do I display japanese imari ceramics?

These decorative plates and chargers suit wall mounting or display on sturdy plate stands where their rich colours catch the light. Large vases and lidded jars anchor corners of a room or sit upon side tables. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight to preserve the vibrancy of the iron-red enamels and gold leaf details. Ensure heavier floor-standing vessels rest on stable, level flooring.

What is the difference between Japanese and English imari?

Japanese examples originate from Arita and date across various historical periods like the Edo and Meiji eras, featuring traditional oriental motifs. English interpretations were produced by domestic firms such as Royal Crown Derby and Davenport during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Whilst both share the characteristic red, blue and gilt palette, the paste, potting techniques and specific floral or bird motifs reflect their respective places of manufacture.

How can I tell the age of a piece?

Dating relies on examining the potting style, the composition of the porcelain body and the characteristics of the painted decoration. Eighteenth-century examples often exhibit heavier potting and distinct iron-foot rims, whilst Meiji period wares show exceptionally refined brushwork. British pieces frequently feature impressed factory marks, registration diamonds or specific pattern numbers on the underside. Comparing these factory stamps or stylistic traits helps narrow down the decade of production.
