How do I hang heavy carved wall lights safely?

Wall fixtures require secure anchorage into solid masonry or direct wall studs using appropriate fixings. The substantial weight of carved wood and gilt gesso demands professional wall brackets. Ensuring the electrical junction box aligns correctly behind the backplate maintains stability and hides wiring. Consulting a qualified electrician guarantees the installation meets safety standards.

Can these antique wall lights be rewired for electricity?

Most antique wall lights adapt readily to modern internal wiring without altering the exterior wooden structure. Electricians can thread contemporary flex through existing channels or discreetly behind the arms. Retaining the original candle tubes or adding appropriate sleeve covers preserves the visual aesthetic. This allows historical fixtures to function safely in modern domestic settings.

How should I clean gilded wood wall lights?

Dusting requires only a very soft, dry brush to remove particles from delicate carved recesses. Moisture and chemical cleaners must be avoided to protect fragile gold leaf and gesso layers. Professional conservators should handle any necessary repairs to flaking surfaces or damaged gilding. Gentle maintenance preserves the historical patina over decades of use.

What is the difference between a sconce and a girandole?

A wall sconce is a bracket fixture attached directly to the wall to hold candles or electric bulbs. Sconces rely entirely on their projecting arms and backplates for decorative impact. A girandole specifically incorporates a mirrored glass panel behind the candle arms to reflect and multiply light. This reflective backing distinguishes the girandole as a more decorative, light-amplifying form.
