What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a compact bedside cabinet originally designed to conceal a chamber pot behind a closed door. These practical pieces often include a shelf or small drawer above the main compartment. Over time, many of these cabinets transitioned into general bedside tables used for holding lamps and books while retaining their enclosed lower storage.

How do I date an inlaid mahogany cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the timber grain, the style of the inlay, and the overall construction methods. Georgian pieces display simpler, heavier proportions with flame mahogany, while Edwardian and Sheraton Revival examples often feature lighter satinwood stringing and delicate floral marquetry. Hardware styles and secondary woods inside drawers also help narrow down the period of manufacture between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Are these bedside cupboards sold as pairs?

Many bedside cabinets appear as matched pairs, though single cupboards are also common. Finding a true pair from the Edwardian period or earlier often reflects their original commission for twin beds. Buyers should examine the dimensions and wood grain closely, as some pairs are assembled later from individually sourced single cabinets.

Where were these cabinets placed?

These cabinets sat directly beside the bed to provide accessible storage for nighttime essentials and washing utensils. Their small footprint made them suitable for bedrooms of varying proportions. Today they function primarily as lamp tables or nightstands, fitting easily beside modern bed heights while offering enclosed storage.
