How do I date these items?

Dating relies heavily on the silver hallmarks stamped onto the mounts, which indicate the assay office and year of manufacture. Stylistic indicators such as Edwardian flourishes or geometric Art Deco motifs also help narrow down the production era.

Were these pieces made as sets?

Many items originated as part of larger matching dressing table sets that included brushes, mirrors, and various powder jars. Individual pieces often survived separately after the original vanity sets became dispersed over time.

How should I clean the silver?

Standard silver polish maintains the shine of the sterling mounts, but care must be taken to avoid abrasive contact with the enamel. Soft cloths and gentle application protect the fragile glass coatings surrounding the metalwork.

What caused the colour variations in enamel?

Makers added different metallic oxides to the glass powder before firing to achieve specific hues like blue, pink, lilac, and green. Translucent variants allowed the underlying guilloche engine-turning to create shimmering optical effects.
