What is a gold muff chain?

A gold muff chain is a long Victorian or Edwardian necklace originally used to suspend a fur hand muff or pocket watch. Today, they are worn as versatile long chains or doubled necklaces, prized for their length and historical metalwork.

How were muff chains worn historically?

They were worn slung loosely around the neck or doubled over to keep hand-warmers and timepieces securely attached and easily accessible. The inclusion of a dog clip allowed the owner to clip the chain directly to garments, muffs, or watches.

What carats of gold are used?

The pieces available utilise various gold standards, most commonly 9ct, 15ct, and 18ct yellow gold, alongside rolled gold variants. Higher carat versions reflect the specific gold regulations and manufacturing practices of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

How do I date a muff chain?

Dating relies on hallmarks, metal carats, link styles, and accompanying components like sliding gemstones or specific clips. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature distinct link types such as paper links, trombone links, or substantial curb chains.
