How do I secure a padlock bracelet?

Padlock clasps on Victorian and Edwardian bracelets usually open via a small spring-loaded mechanism or a pivoting bail. Ensure the spring snaps firmly shut against the loop to maintain security during wear. Many of these padlocks also attach to a safety chain linked nearby for added peace of mind. Check that both the primary snap and the safety chain remain intact before wearing.

Are these bracelets suitable for daily wear?

Many gold gemstone link bracelets are robust enough for regular wear, particularly sturdy 9ct and 15ct gold curb or gate link designs. However, antique pieces set with softer stones like pearls or opals require greater care to avoid impact. Consider removing your bracelet before swimming, gardening or performing heavy manual tasks. Storing each piece individually in a lined box prevents the metal links from scratching the gemstones.

How can I date my bracelet?

Dating relies on hallmarks, metal purity standards, gemstone cuts and overall stylistic motifs. British hallmarks often include date letters and maker's marks that pinpoint the exact year and assay office of creation. Stylistic cues also help narrow the timeframe, such as the rose gold and garnet combinations typical of the Edwardian era or the geometric lines characteristic of 1930s Art Deco.

What is the difference between 9ct and 15ct gold?

Fifteen carat gold contains a higher proportion of pure gold than 9ct gold, resulting in a richer, warmer tone. British makers utilised 15ct gold frequently during the Victorian and Edwardian periods before it was largely replaced by 9ct and 14ct standards. Both alloys offer excellent durability for jewellery links, but 15ct pieces carry a higher gold content favoured by collectors of antique fine jewellery.
