How do I install an antique wall light?

Many surviving fixtures arrive pre-wired for modern electrical standards or retain their original candle sockets. Consult a qualified electrician to secure the heavy bronze or giltwood bracket safely to wall studs. Ensure the mounting plate matches the weight of multi-arm models, particularly heavy triple and quadruple arm configurations containing crystal drops.

Are these fixtures meant for candles or electricity?

Historical examples were built strictly for wax or tallow candles. Twentieth-century adaptations frequently incorporate internal wiring to hold electric candle tubes. Conversion methods vary, so examine the nozzle fittings to determine whether the fixture holds traditional candles or modern bulbs.

How do I clean gilded bronze?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulating grime in intricate chased recesses. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the original ormolu or gold leaf. Professional care is recommended for fragile giltwood and crystal components to preserve the historic finish.

What defines Louis XV style?

This aesthetic draws on asymmetrical natural forms, including acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and flowing scrollwork. It became a popular revival motif for French bronze founders. Pieces from this tradition prioritise organic movement over rigid symmetry.
