How do automatic watches work?

Automatic watches contain a weighted internal rotor that spins as the wearer moves their arm throughout the day. This rotational energy transfers directly to the mainspring, keeping the watch wound without manual intervention. Because they rely on kinetic energy from daily wear, these timepieces will eventually stop if left off the wrist for a prolonged period and must be reset upon wearing again.

Are these watches waterproof?

Mid-century dress watches generally offered only basic moisture resistance rather than modern diving-grade waterproofing. Even models bearing names associated with water resistance should be kept away from moisture due to the age of their original seals and gaskets. Professional restoration can improve water resistance, but collectors usually treat vintage gold timepieces as splash-resistant at best to preserve their internal components.

How should I care for a vintage watch?

Vintage mechanical timepieces benefit from gentle handling, regular servicing by a qualified watchmaker, and avoidance of strong magnetic fields and sudden impacts. Keeping the acrylic crystal clear and protecting the movement from moisture ensures longevity. When not being worn, storing the watch in a dry environment away from direct sunlight preserves the leather strap and prevents internal lubricants from degrading prematurely.
