What is a gold applique light fixture?

A gold applique light fixture is a wall-mounted sconce or light fitting finished in gilt metal, bronze, brass or giltwood. These pieces project from vertical surfaces to provide functional illumination. They appear as single units, pairs or larger sets featuring two, three or more arms designed for candles or electric bulbs.

How do I identify French styles?

French wall lights often display Rococo, Louis XV Revival or Neoclassical characteristics such as scrolling foliage, symmetrical urns or classical masks. Bronze and brass castings define these continental pieces. Examining the backplate and arm junctions helps reveal the manufacturing period, typically ranging from the nineteenth century into the 1930s.

How do I care for gilt surfaces?

Gilded bronze, brass and giltwood require gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasion to the delicate metallic finish. Avoid using chemical polishes, water or abrasive cleaners which can strip the gold leaf or ormolu. Keeping the fixtures away from excessive moisture preserves the underlying metal and wood structures over time.
