What is a girandole mirror?

A girandole is a wall mirror that incorporates one or more candle sconces attached to the frame. The reflective glass amplifies the light cast by the candles. These pieces functioned as both lighting fixtures and decorative wall ornaments in period drawing rooms and halls.

How do I identify a Regency convex mirror?

Regency convex mirrors feature circular frames enclosing a bulging, rounded glass plate that curves outward. They frequently include ebonised reeded inner bezels and crests featuring eagles or balls. These convex glasses were designed to reflect a wide panoramic view of the entire room.

Where should I hang a giltwood wall sconce?

These sconces suit locations where they can capture natural daylight or evening candlelight, such as between windows or above mantelpieces. Placing them opposite a light source maximises their reflective impact. Ensure the wall construction supports the weight of the carved wood and glass structure securely.

How do I date an antique gilt mirror?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, construction methods, and the type of wood and gesso used in the frame. Georgian and Regency pieces show different carved motifs and proportions compared to later Victorian Rococo Revival or 1920s Florentine examples. Examining the backboards, fixings, and the nature of the mirror glass provides further clues to the period of manufacture.
