How do I date a giltwood frame?

Dating relies on the composition of the gesso, the style of the carved ornamentation, and the underlying wood construction. Earlier frames often feature hand-carved details, while later Victorian examples utilise moulded gesso. Examining the reverse reveals construction methods, nail types, and wood ageing that correspond to specific nineteenth-century periods.

Are all these paintings on canvas?

While oil on canvas is common, the selection also includes works painted on wooden boards and paper watercolours. Each support requires distinct preservation approaches. Material variations appear across different Victorian and Edwardian schools, reflecting the preference of the individual artist.

How should I clean a giltwood frame?

Giltwood requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to remove surface particles without disturbing the delicate gold leaf. Moisture and chemical cleaners strip the metallic finish. Professional conservation is recommended for frames with flaking gesso or significant losses to the gilded surface.
