How do I date a gilt frame?

Dating relies upon examining the underlying gesso composition, the joining methods at the corners, and the moulding profile. Earlier seventeenth and eighteenth century frames feature hand carved wooden enrichment, whereas later nineteenth century examples often utilise moulded gesso. Changes in decorative motifs across Georgian, Regency, and Victorian styles provide clear chronological markers. Comparing the style of the frame to the period of the canvas helps confirm whether the pairing is original.

What subjects are most common?

Portraiture forms a significant portion of the offerings, ranging from seventeenth century nobility to nineteenth century figures. Landscapes, maritime scenes, and still lifes depicting flowers or fruit also appear frequently across various periods. Animal studies, including equine portraits and sporting dogs, represent another established genre within these listings. Each subject reflects the prevailing artistic patronage of its specific era.

How should I hang these pieces?

These works require secure wall fixings matched to the substantial combined weight of the painting and its heavy gilt frame. Position them away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to protect both the canvas and the delicate gold leaf. Lighting should be angled carefully to illuminate the painting surface while minimising glare off the reflective gilt frame. Professional picture hooks screwed directly into wall studs provide the necessary support.

Are the frames original to the paintings?

Many works retain their period frames, though some have been paired with complementary surrounds over the centuries. Examining the fit at the rabbet and the wear patterns on the wood helps determine if frame and canvas have a shared history. A well matched replacement frame from the correct period remains entirely acceptable if it enhances the visual presentation of the artwork.
