Where should a longcase clock go?

These tall timepieces need a stable, plumb wall in a hallway, landing, or principal room where floor vibrations are minimal to keep the pendulum swinging truly. Ensure the ceiling height accommodates the hood without crowding architectural details. Position the clock away from direct sunlight and damp exterior walls to protect the delicate lacquer and gilt surfaces from temperature fluctuations and humidity.

How do 8-day movements work?

An 8-day movement is driven by two heavy weights suspended on lines or chains inside the trunk, requiring winding once a week with a specialised key. The falling weights transfer energy through the train of wheels to the escapement and pendulum. This system allows the clock to run continuously for over a week before needing manual intervention to pull the weights back to the top.

How do I spot a later revival?

Revival pieces from the 20th century often display cleaner interior woods, machine-cut gear components, and finishes that lack the fine crazing and patina found on 18th-century surfaces. Examining the backboards and hinge fixings helps reveal the true age of the carcase. Stylistic cues also separate periods, as 1930s Chinoiserie interpretations adopt slightly different proportions and pigment handling compared to authentic Georgian production.

What is a grandmother clock?

A grandmother clock is a scaled-down version of the traditional grandfather clock, standing significantly shorter while retaining the same proportions and mechanical principles. They appeared more frequently in the 19th century and later periods to fit rooms with lower ceilings. Despite their reduced stature, these clocks still feature fitted movements and decorative cases designed to mimic their larger counterparts.
