How do I date a gilt frame?

Dating relies on examining the construction of the wooden corners, the composition of the underlying gesso, and the tools used to apply the metallic leaf. Earlier frames often feature hand-carved wooden profiles, whereas later Victorian examples utilise moulded plaster applied directly to simpler timber foundations. Changes in moulding profiles and decorative motifs also reflect the prevailing taste of periods such as the Regency or Edwardian eras. Comparing the style of the frame to the date of the artwork helps confirm whether they are original to one another.

Are these works original?

The listings include both original hand-produced works, such as oil paintings, watercolours, and pastels, alongside period prints, engravings, and lithographs. Each medium carries distinct physical characteristics under close inspection, such as visible brush texture in oils or plate marks surrounding engravings. Descriptions specify whether a piece is an artist's direct creation or a contemporary reproduction print. This allows buyers to distinguish unique historical artworks from published editions of the period.

How should I hang these pictures?

Heavy gilt frames require secure wall fixings suited to the combined weight of the wood, gesso, and glass. Ensuring the hanging wire and back attachments are structurally sound protects both the wall and the antique frame during display. Positioning pictures away from direct sunlight and damp environments preserves the delicate pigments on paper and prevents the gesso from drying out. Maintaining stable room temperatures keeps both canvas and timber stable over time.

What does a trumeau mirror include?

A trumeau combines a vertical wall mirror with an oil painting set into the upper section of the wooden panel. These architectural pieces were designed to hang between windows or above mantelpieces in grand domestic interiors. The integration of landscape or maritime oil paintings within the woodwork creates a unified decorative scheme. They represent a specific form of French interior furnishing from the nineteenth century and earlier.
