How do I install an antique wall light?

Many vintage wall lights require professional electrical wiring to meet current safety standards before mounting. An electrician secures the backplate to a standard wall junction box. Ensure the wall structure can support the weight of heavier bronze or brass fixtures safely. Proper anchoring prevents the sconce from pulling away from the plaster.

What is the difference between an applique and a sconce?

Applique is a traditional French term often used interchangeably with wall sconce in antique lighting. Both refer to decorative brackets attached to walls for holding candles or electric bulbs. Regional terminology often dictates which word a dealer uses in a title. The underlying function and placement remain identical for both descriptions.

How do I clean gilded brass safely?

Dust the metal gently using a soft, dry cloth to remove surface particles without scratching the finish. Avoid abrasive metal polishes that strip away the delicate layer of gold gilding. Water and harsh chemical cleaners damage historic surface treatments over time. Professional conservation methods should be considered for heavily tarnished or soiled metal.
