How do I hang a heavy giltwood girandole safely?

These pieces require secure anchoring into solid wall studs or masonry using heavy-duty picture hooks rated for the specific weight of the frame and glass. Because the combination of carved wood, gesso, and glass creates substantial heft, professional installation ensures the mirror hangs level and secure without stressing the antique structure.

Where were girandoles traditionally placed in a historic home?

Girandoles were typically mounted on piers between windows or directly over mantelpieces to maximise the reflection of natural daylight and evening candle flames. Positioning them opposite windows allowed the convex or flat glass to bounce light deep into the darker corners of a reception room.

How can I tell a Regency convex mirror from a Victorian reproduction?

Regency examples often feature distinct construction markers such as ebonised reeded inner rings, heavy eagle crests, and original convex glass with minor silvering losses. Victorian and later nineteenth-century interpretations frequently display different proportions, machine-turned components, or heavier plaster composition rather than traditional carved gesso.

How should I clean antique giltwood and mirror glass?

Dust giltwood frames very gently with a dry, soft artist's brush to avoid damaging the delicate gold leaf or fragile gesso relief work. Keep water and chemical solvents entirely away from the gilded surfaces, using only a slightly damp cloth on the glass itself while avoiding the edges where the silvering meets the frame.
