What is an oil board painting?

An oil board painting is an artwork created with oil pigments upon a rigid wooden or composition panel rather than woven fabric. Artists often selected this format for portable outdoor studies and smaller studio pieces. The rigid nature of the board meant the support did not require re-tensioning over time. This made the medium durable for everyday display in domestic interiors.

How do I date a gilded frame?

Dating a gilded frame involves examining the construction of the wooden corners, the profile of the moulding, and the composition of the gesso layer underneath the metallic leaf. Different eras favoured distinct decorative motifs, ranging from heavy nineteenth-century revival styles to simpler twentieth-century profiles. Changes in manufacturing techniques also help establish age. Hand-carved wooden elements differ noticeably from later composition ornaments pressed into place.

Are these paintings original works?

The selection includes original painted works executed directly by artists, alongside occasional pieces noted as being painted after earlier masters. Signatures, inscriptions, and brush textures help confirm the direct hand of the painter. Examining the paint surface under magnification reveals the natural build-up of pigment and brushstrokes characteristic of authentic period artwork.

How should I care for oil on board?

Oil on board works require stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight to preserve the integrity of both the paint layer and the wooden support. Keeping the piece away from extreme temperature fluctuations prevents the wooden board from warping. Dusting the frame gently with a soft dry brush maintains the gilt surface without introducing moisture that could damage the gesso.
