What is a gilded bronze mounted table?

A gilded bronze mounted table is a piece of nineteenth century furniture decorated with cast ormolu mounts, often featuring marble tops and hardwood construction. These items draw heavily from French revival styles including Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Empire designs.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on stylistic cues, timber choices, and the specific casting quality of the metal mounts found on the piece. Nineteenth century examples frequently combine revival aesthetics with heavy cast ormolu and imported marble slabs.

Where were these tables used?

These pieces served practical and decorative functions in formal reception rooms, drawing rooms, and private libraries. They functioned as writing desks, display surfaces for porcelain, or central room tables designed to catch the light.

How should I care for ormolu mounts?

Ormolu requires gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth to prevent abrasion of the delicate gilded surface. Harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided entirely to preserve the original fire gilding or gold wash on the bronze.
