What is a georgian watch fob used for?

These pieces originally hung from a pocket watch chain to anchor the timepiece in a waistcoat pocket or display heraldic marks. They served a practical purpose as signet seals for documents. Today, they are frequently worn as pendants on modern chains or collected as miniature sculptures.

How do I date a watch fob?

Dating relies on the style of the mount, the metal purity marks, and the cutting technique of the stone. Georgian pieces often feature Neoclassical or simpler geometric motifs. Later Victorian iterations tend to be heavier and incorporate more ornate cast decoration or different coloured golds.

Can these fobs still be used to seal wax?

Most pieces with carved stone bases retain their intaglio designs and can impress sealing wax. The stone must be checked for chips before use. Original seals often bear family crests or initials belonging to the original owner.

What metals are these fobs made from?

The listings show items made from various grades of gold, gilt metal, sterling silver, and cut steel. Many are unhallmarked due to their small size. Yellow gold and gilt brass are particularly common among the surviving examples.
