What is a georgian storage press used for?

These large cabinets served domestic households for storing folded linens, bed sheets, and garments before dedicated bedroom closets became common architectural fixtures. The upper section typically holds sliding trays or hanging rails, whilst the lower chest of drawers accommodates smaller apparel. Modern homes utilise these pieces in bedrooms, hallways, and living spaces to provide substantial concealed storage with distinct architectural character. Their deep proportions make them exceptionally practical for bulky items.

How do I tell a georgian press from a later copy?

Examine the timber construction methods, secondary woods, and hardware fixings visible inside the drawers and carcass backs. Period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, and hand-planed surfaces rather than modern mechanical fastenings. Style indicators also help date the piece, as Georgian and Regency versions display distinct cornice proportions, foot forms, and inlay motifs compared to Edwardian or later reproduction furniture.

Will a large press fit into a modern room?

Most presses are substantial items of furniture built in two sections - an upper cabinet that lifts off a lower chest base - which simplifies transport and installation. Measuring ceiling height and staircase clearance is essential before acquisition due to their imposing height and depth. Positioning them against a blank wall allows the proportion and timber figure of the mahogany or oak to become a focal point without overwhelming smaller room elements.

What is the difference between a wardrobe and a press?

A traditional press incorporates internal sliding trays designed for flat folded textiles rather than a full-height hanging space for garments. Many historical pieces were later converted to wardrobes by removing internal trays to accommodate modern clothes hangers. Cabinets listed as gentlemans wardrobes or compactums often combine both hanging compartments and sliding tray sections within a single architectural facade.
