What is a bachelors chest?

A bachelors chest is a small set of drawers featuring a pull-out slide used for writing or grooming. They offer both storage and a desk surface in a compact footprint.

How do I use a brushing slide?

The brushing slide pulls straight out from beneath the top surface of the chest. It provides a temporary shelf for holding papers, garments, or grooming items.

What woods were used?

Cabinet makers built these pieces using mahogany, flame mahogany, walnut, and oak. Secondary woods such as pine and oak appear in the internal drawer linings.

How do I date these chests?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, timber choices, and construction methods associated with the Georgian era. Most examples date from the eighteenth century through to around eighteen hundred.
