How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many older bedsteads were built to slightly different dimensions than contemporary standard sizes. Checking internal rail measurements ensures a proper fit for modern mattress bases. Custom slats or base supports can often be integrated to accommodate standard modern mattresses securely without altering the antique frame.

Can I dismantle these beds easily?

Most nineteenth-century wooden and brass frames utilise bolt-in side rails and detachable head and footboards. This design allows for straightforward transport and installation. Care should be taken with threaded metal bolts or wooden tenons during assembly to protect the original joinery from undue stress.

How do I clean painted wood?

Painted and parcel gilt surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might degrade the aged finish. Microfibre cloths lift surface grime effectively while preserving the underlying patina and nineteenth-century paint layers.

Are brass beds structurally sound?

Solid brass frameworks offer robust durability when joints and cast metal connectors remain secure. Regular checks on tension keep the structure rigid. Polishing should be done sparingly using appropriate metal cleaners to maintain the natural brass sheen without stripping vintage character.
