What is a French mounted lamp?

A French mounted lamp is a decorative lighting fixture created by taking an existing ceramic, stone, or glass vessel and fitting it with cast metal mounts. These pieces draw on historical design vocabularies like the Louis XV and Neoclassical styles. They transform traditional decorative arts into functional interior lighting while retaining the artistic merit of the original body.

How do I date a mounted lamp?

Dating relies on examining the material composition, the style of the metal mounts, and the wiring or internal hardware. Nineteenth-century examples often feature hand-chased bronze mounts paired with Paris porcelain or marble bodies. Later twentieth-century iterations show different casting techniques and wiring standards that reflect the manufacturing shifts of the 1920s and 1930s.

Where were these lamps used historically?

These lamps were placed on occasional tables, side tables, and chests within formal drawing rooms, libraries, and bedrooms. They provided ambient illumination while serving as sculptural displays of wealth and taste. Their pairs suggest they were positioned symmetrically on mantelpieces, sideboards, or matching bedside cabinets.

How do I care for antique ormolu?

Maintain ormolu mounts by dusting them gently with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of grit. Avoid chemical polishes and abrasive cleaners, which strip the thin layer of gold leaf from the bronze substrate. Keep the lamps away from direct moisture and handling that might transfer oils to the gilded surfaces.
