What is a french marquetry bedside table?

A french marquetry bedside table is a small decorative cabinet featuring detailed wood veneer patterns, often accented with bronze mounts and marble tops. These pieces were designed to hold night-time necessities while adding elegance to the bedroom. Most surviving examples date from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing stylistic inspiration from earlier royal French periods. They appear as small chests of drawers, cupboards or open lamp tables.

How do I tell Louis XV from Louis XVI styles?

Louis XV style furniture is characterised by flowing curves, serpentine fronts, bombe shapes and elaborate asymmetrical floral marquetry. The legs typically curve outward in a cabriole design. Louis XVI style moves towards neoclassical symmetry, featuring straight tapered legs, fluted columns and geometric parquetry or restrained ribbon-and-flower motifs. Straight lines and rectangular proportions replace the undulating curves of the earlier period.

Were these tables always made in pairs?

While many bedside tables survive as matched pairs intended to flank a bed symmetrically, single cabinets were also produced for smaller spaces or individual use. Pairs are particularly sought after by collectors aiming for balanced bedroom layouts. Makers frequently constructed matching twins during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, though single survivors remain common in the antique market.

How do I care for antique wood veneer?

Antique wood veneer requires protection from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the glues from drying out and the wood from cracking. Gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth maintains the polished surface without harsh chemicals. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the timbers and preserve the historical sheen of the rosewood, kingwood or walnut veneers.
