How do I identify kingwood?

Kingwood is a dense tropical hardwood characterised by distinct dark violet, brown, and golden striping. It takes a high polish and was sliced into thin veneers for decorative surfaces. Cabinet makers used these veneers to create complex marquetry and parquetry designs across tabletops and drawers.

Where were these tables used?

These tables served various domestic functions ranging from bedside storage to drawing room display and letter writing. Centre tables stood prominently in large reception spaces as decorative focal points. Smaller occasional and lamp tables accommodated lighting and decorative objects in sitting rooms and boudoirs.

How do I care for a marble top?

Marble tops require gentle cleaning with mild soap and water to avoid dulling the polished stone surface. Acidic liquids like wine or citrus should be wiped away immediately to prevent staining. Waxing the surrounding kingwood timber separately helps maintain the overall finish without affecting the stone.
