What is a standard lamp?

A standard lamp is simply the traditional British term for a floor-standing lighting fixture. These pieces were designed to provide ambient illumination in reception rooms without requiring surface space on tables. Over time, the form evolved from heavy metal columns to lighter designs, though the tall upright format remained constant for illuminating seating areas.

How do I date a brass floor lamp?

Dating relies on stylistic clues and construction methods specific to different periods. Victorian examples often feature ornate Corinthian capitals or heavy telescopic mechanisms, whilst 1920s pieces frequently show Art Deco streamlining or simpler neoclassical revival lines. Examining the casting quality and the type of metal used helps place the piece within its historical manufacturing era, from the nineteenth century through the Edwardian period.

Are these lamps height adjustable?

Many examples incorporate telescopic mechanisms that allow you to alter the height of the column. These adjustable designs became popular for directing light precisely where needed in period interiors. When inspecting an adjustable lamp, the sliding mechanism should operate smoothly within the main shaft to hold the upper section securely at the chosen elevation.

Where should I place a floor lamp?

These tall floor lamps suit corners of reception rooms or beside large armchairs where they can provide effective reading light. Their architectural presence makes them suitable focal points within a traditional interior scheme. Ensure the heavy brass base rests on a stable surface, as the solid metal construction provides considerable weight at ground level.
