What subjects appear in these works?

Paintings show fishing boats, harbours, cliffs and estuaries around the British coast. Scenes often feature specific locations in Yorkshire, Cornwall, Dorset and Norfolk. Artists recorded both quiet tidal mudflats and dramatic stormy seas alongside working vessels like trawlers and cobles.

How do watercolours and oils differ?

Watercolours use transparent pigments on paper to create luminous, light-filled effects of sea and sky. They are typically mounted behind glass to protect the delicate paper. Oil paintings utilise thicker pigments on canvas or board, offering deeper textures and richer colour blending. They allow artists to capture heavy impasto waves and dramatic cloud formations.

How can I date a piece?

Dates often rely on artist biographical records, signature styles and accompanying exhibition labels. Victorian works tend to show tight academic detail, while 1950s pieces embrace looser impressionist brushwork. Clothing styles of figures on beaches or the design of moored boats also help narrow down the decade of creation.

How should I frame and hang them?

Watercolours require conservation framing with acid-free mounts to prevent paper degradation from humidity and light. Keep them away from direct sunlight to preserve the fugitive pigments. Oil paintings on canvas need breathable backing boards and stable indoor humidity. They suit traditional moulded wood frames that complement the period of the artwork.
