What is an edwardian letter box cabinet used for?

These cabinets serve as desktop storage for incoming and outgoing post, letters, and writing paper. They keep desks tidy by containing correspondence in dedicated slots. Larger versions accommodate ink bottles, stamps, and stationery alongside the main letter aperture. This makes them complete correspondence centres for a study.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian boxes?

Victorian examples often display heavier proportions and darker timbers like mahogany or heavily carved oak, sometimes with Gothic influences. They lean towards robust utility. Edwardian pieces generally present lighter oak or inlaid mahogany with satinwood and boxwood stringing. The aesthetic shifts towards refined country house elegance.

Can these cabinets be mounted on a wall?

Certain designated letter boxes feature wall-mounting brackets or flat backs with hanging apertures. These were designed for hallways or entrance areas to receive household post directly. Most variations, however, are freestanding desk accessories meant to sit upon a library table or bureau rather than hang.

What materials are typical for these pieces?

Oak and mahogany form the vast majority of surviving examples, supplemented by walnut, satinwood, and occasionally boxwood for fine details. Brass provides the metalwork for letter plates and hinges. Interior fittings frequently include glass ink bottles and small ceramic or brass nameplates designating answered and unanswered post.
