What is an Edwardian cruet set used for?

A cruet set holds table condiments such as oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and mustard during a meal. The glass bottles or jars sit securely within a structured metal frame for convenient placement on the dining table. These sets allowed diners to season their food individually. Many examples include multiple matching bottles and stoppers.

How do I care for antique silver table items?

Antique silver requires gentle cleaning with a specialised silver cloth or non-abrasive polish to remove tarnish without harming the metal surface. Store pieces away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve the finish. Cased items benefit from remaining in their original silk or velvet-lined boxes when not in use. Avoid using harsh chemical dips on pieces with enamel or delicate glass components.

Were menu holders common in Edwardian dining?

Menu holders became popular during the Edwardian era as formal dinners featured elaborate, multi-course menus that required proper placement at each setting. Hosts utilised them to inform guests of the upcoming dishes. Silversmiths produced these holders in whimsical figural designs, including animals, classical figures, and motifs like sailboats. They double as place card holders for seating arrangements.
