What are Edwardian collectables?

Edwardian collectables are small functional and decorative objects produced roughly between the late nineteenth century and the outbreak of the First World War. They include personal accessories, desk items, and domestic novelties made for everyday use. These pieces reflect the tastes, leisure activities, and manufacturing skills of the period, ranging from silver pin cushions to scientific instruments.

How were silver pin cushions used?

Silver novelty pin cushions sat upon dressing tables or desks to hold sewing pins and needles close at hand. Their whimsical shapes served as conversation pieces as well as practical desk accessories. Collectors prize them today for their miniature sculptural qualities and the variety of animal and object forms in which they were cast.

How do I identify an Edwardian silver piece?

Identifying an Edwardian silver piece relies on reading the hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the assay office, the silver standard, and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture. Stylistic cues such as soft curves, organic motifs, and specific maker marks also help place an object firmly within the early twentieth-century timeline.

How should I care for antique pocket items?

Antique pocket items and silver novelties require gentle handling to preserve fragile components like enamel, glass, and original velvet linings. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can wear away delicate hallmarks and fine surface engraving. Displaying them away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture helps maintain the integrity of organic materials such as wood, bone, and mother-of-pearl.
