How do I hang a heavy canvas painting?

Heavy oil paintings on canvas require secure fixings screwed directly into wall studs or heavy-duty wall anchors designed for the weight of the timber stretcher and frame. Ensure the picture wire or D-rings on the back are robust enough to support the entire load before mounting the piece at eye level.

Are these paintings supplied in frames?

Many listings include original or period frames, such as wooden or giltwood surrounds, which complement the age of the artwork. Check the specific description of each piece to confirm whether the frame is included in the sale.

How should I clean an oil painting?

Dust accumulation on a canvas painting should be removed gently using a very soft, dry brush without applying pressure to the paint surface. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or household chemicals, as these can permanently damage the oil layers and canvas.

How do I tell the period of a painting?

The period is indicated by the canvas preparation, the style of the wooden stretcher, and the characteristics of the framing technique used. Stylistic movements such as British Impressionism, Realism, and Georgian classical landscapes also help date the execution of the work.
