How do I install antique wall lights?

Most period wall lights require mounting directly to wall studs or secure anchors to support the weight of cast bronze or carved wood bodies. Professional wiring is typically necessary to adapt historical fittings for modern electrical standards. Ensure the backplate covers existing electrical junction boxes safely, or plan for surface-mounted concealment where wiring channels do not align with original bracket mounts.

Were these lights originally for candles or electricity?

The earlier examples in this selection were designed exclusively for candles or oil, relying on mirrored glass and polished metal surfaces to maximise the flickering flame light. Twentieth-century pieces frequently integrated electric sockets from their creation. Converted pieces retain their original bobeches and drip pans, which can be adapted to hold candle-style bulb covers without altering the structural metalwork.

How do I match antique wall lights to my room?

Consider the scale of the room and the height of the ceilings when selecting between single-arm brackets, twin-arm sconces, or large multi-branch chandeliers. Neoclassical and Adam styles offer symmetrical formality, while Rococo and girandole designs introduce flowing, organic movement. Matching pairs work well flanking a mirror, fireplace, or architectural doorway to establish balanced focal points along the walls.

How do I care for giltwood and ormolu finishes?

Gilt bronze and ormolu require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent abrasive particles from scratching the delicate gold surface. Avoid chemical polishes that strip thin layers of gilding or harm the underlying metal. Giltwood and gesso surfaces are particularly sensitive to moisture and direct sunlight, meaning they should be placed away from damp areas and unshaded heat sources.
