Will a standard mattress fit a vintage corbeille bedstead?

Many older French beds were built to dimensions that differ slightly from modern standard sizing. It is sensible to check the internal measurements of the wooden frame before purchasing a mattress. Custom mattress makers can often supply a piece cut to the exact proportions required for an antique bedstead. This ensures proper support within the curved confines of the headboard and footboard.

How do I care for a painted wooden bed frame?

Painted surfaces require gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might degrade the historic paint finish over time. If the paint shows signs of wear, minor touch-ups should be undertaken with matching mineral or chalk paints. Preserving the original patina maintains the character of the piece.

What is the difference between Louis XV and Louis XVI styles on these beds?

Louis XV style beds are characterised by sweeping curves, asymmetric motifs, and flowing organic shapes. The lines are soft and undulating, reflecting Rococo influences. Louis XVI style frames introduce straighter lines, symmetry, and neoclassical geometric details. Fluted columns and rectangular panel proportions often replace the exuberant curves of the earlier period.

How are these beds dismantled for transport?

Antique French bedframes typically assemble using metal bolts or proprietary bed bolts that connect the headboard, footboard, and side rails. These components can be unscrewed to break the structure down into manageable flat parts. Care should be taken with older hardware, as threads can strip if forced. Keeping the original fixings together during a move protects the integrity of the joints.
