How do I wire an antique brass lamp safely?

Most antique metal lamps require rewiring to meet modern electrical standards due to perished insulation in older cables. A qualified electrician can thread contemporary wiring through the existing brass column or central channel. It is important to retain original brass lamp holders and switches where possible, updating only the internal flex and plug for safety during daily use.

What is the difference between ormolu and brass?

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, possessing a warm metallic tone that can be polished or left to age naturally. Ormolu refers specifically to gilded bronze where a layer of gold amalgam is applied to a bronze core. Ormolu exhibits a deeper, more lustrous golden colour and sharper cast detail than standard stamped or cast brass components.

How do I clean gilded bronze wall lights?

Gilded bronze and ormolu require gentle maintenance to preserve the delicate gold surface layer. Dusting with a soft brush and wiping lightly with a dry cloth prevents the buildup of grime without abrasive rubbing. Harsh metal polishes must be avoided entirely, as they strip away the historic gilding and expose the darker base metal underneath.

Were these chandeliers originally electric?

Chandeliers dating from the nineteenth century and earlier were designed for candles or oil rather than electricity. They were subsequently adapted during the twentieth century to take electrical wiring and bulb fittings. This conversion process often involved hollowing out internal channels or running discreet external flex along the structural arms of the metalwork.
