How do I date a mahogany chest?

Examine the secondary woods inside the drawers, handle styles, and construction methods. Georgian pieces often display distinct dovetailing and timber choices compared to later Victorian iterations. Look closely at the drawer linings and backboards for tool marks and timber ageing. These internal details reveal the period of manufacture more reliably than exterior styling alone.

How should I maintain a wax finish?

Apply a quality beeswax periodically using a soft cloth, following the direction of the wood grain. Buff gently after application to maintain a natural lustre and protect the timber surface. Avoid placing wooden chests near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Stable indoor humidity prevents timber splitting and veneer lifting.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a standard chest?

A tallboy provides vertical storage by stacking a smaller chest section on top of a larger base chest. Standard chests feature a single, lower carcass. This vertical division allows tallboys to offer greater drawer capacity without requiring a larger footprint on the bedroom floor.
