How were these chests used historically?

Merchants, military officers and travellers utilised these trunks to pack and transport personal belongings, uniforms and valuable documents across oceans. At home, they served as blanket boxes, coffee tables or secure storage for household linens, relying on the natural fragrance of the wood to keep contents fresh.

How do I live with a camphor chest?

These chests function well as living room coffee tables, bedroom blanket boxes or hallway storage trunks, adding texture and historical character to modern interiors. Their natural wood aroma remains gentle over time, making them ideal for storing woollens, blankets and keepsakes while providing a sturdy surface for display.

How do I tell different periods apart?

Earlier eighteenth and early nineteenth-century pieces often feature plain timber with heavy brass mounts and simple campaign construction, prioritising travel utility over decoration. Later nineteenth and twentieth-century examples frequently display dense hand-carved motifs, soapstone inlays, or integrated cabinet structures reflecting changing export tastes.
