What is a carved wood vanity table used for?

These tables provide a dedicated surface for morning grooming, hair styling, and the application of cosmetics. They often incorporate small drawers for storage and adjustable mirrors. Historically, they formed a central piece of bedroom furniture, frequently paired with a matching stool or washstand for daily personal routines.

How do I date a wooden dressing table?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, and prevailing decorative styles such as Victorian mahogany or Edwardian marquetry. Secondary woods and drawer dovetailing provide further clues. Cabinet hardware, handle styles, and the method of silvering on mirror glass also help narrow down the period of manufacture.

Are mirrors usually fixed or removable?

Most period dressing tables feature removable swing mirrors mounted on upright supports, allowing the glass to tilt independently from the main surface. Some smaller table mirrors sit freely on top of the cabinet, while larger cheval or overmantel mirrors stand on the floor or fasten directly to walls.

How do I care for antique timber furniture?

Protect the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber splitting. Regular dusting with a dry cloth preserves the finish. Apply occasional professional wax polish to nourish the grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays that can damage historic polishes over time.
