What is a Gainsborough chair?

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, open armchair designed in the 18th century specifically for sitting at a desk or reading in a library. These chairs feature padded armrests and upholstered seats to ensure comfort during long hours of study.

How do I identify a Georgian library chair?

Georgian library chairs usually display robust mahogany frames with characteristic carved details like ball-and-claw feet or blind fretwork. They date from the 18th century into the early 19th century and exhibit restrained, classical proportions.

Were these chairs used at desks?

Many library chairs double as desk chairs due to their supportive arm height and sturdy timber construction. Desk variants often incorporate swiveling bases or fixed upholstered heights tailored for writing tables.

What materials cover the seats?

Original upholstery typically consists of hand-dyed English hide leather, woven cane, or textured fabric. Leather surfaces were often secured with decorative brass nailheads around the frame borders.
