How do I hang heavy wall sconces safely?

Heavy metal and carved wood wall lights require secure anchorage into solid masonry or substantial timber wall studs. Using appropriate fixings ensures the weight of the cast bronze or giltwood is supported properly. Professional installation is recommended for multi-arm fixtures, particularly those incorporating mirrors or crystal components, to prevent strain on the mounting points.

Were these fixtures originally wired for electricity?

Original historical wall sconces were manufactured exclusively to hold wax or tallow candles. Wiring is typically added later for modern domestic convenience. When converting these pieces, conservation-minded methods preserve the original structure and sockets without altering the visible historical metalwork or carved wood.

How do I clean gilt bronze and giltwood safely?

Dust accumulated on delicate surfaces should be removed gently using a soft, dry artist brush or a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh commercial cleaning liquids that can strip historical gilding. Moisture and abrasive agents damage fragile gold leaf and aged metal patinas, so gentle dusting remains the standard maintenance method for antique finishes.

What is the difference between a sconce and a girandole?

A standard wall sconce consists of a bracket and candle arms attached directly to a wall or backing plate. It relies entirely on the room environment for background reflection. A girandole specifically incorporates a mirrored glass panel behind the candle branches to multiply the available light within the interior space.
