What is a compactum wardrobe?

A compactum is a large combination wardrobe that integrates hanging space, shelving, and internal drawers into one piece of furniture. They were designed to provide comprehensive clothing storage for a gentleman or lady without needing separate chests of drawers.

How do I date a wooden wardrobe?

Dating relies on observing the prevailing timber choices, architectural styles, and construction methods of specific eras. Georgian pieces show classical breakfront lines, while Victorian examples often feature heavy figured mahogany and Edwardian items display satinwood inlay. Secondary details like brass hardware and internal drawer dovetailing also help pinpoint the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place a large triple wardrobe?

These substantial pieces require a bedroom or dressing room with adequate wall space and ceiling height. Because many are built as large single carcases or heavy modular sections, measuring access routes through hallways and stairwells is essential. Positioning them away from direct sunlight preserves the polished finish of the mahogany and walnut timbers.

How do I maintain wood finishes?

Maintaining the timber involves dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax periodically to nourish the polished surface. Avoiding placement near heat sources prevents the wood and veneers from drying out or splitting. Gentle care preserves the natural lustre of the mahogany, walnut, and satinwood.
