What is a sutherland table used for?

These tables served primarily as occasional furniture in Victorian and Edwardian drawing rooms, easily moved and expanded when guests arrived for tea. Today, their compact folded profile makes them practical beside a sofa or as a small lamp table in tight spaces.

How do I identify a Victorian sutherland table?

Look for characteristic timber choices like walnut or mahogany, often combined with turned gate-leg supports and ceramic or brass castors. Many examples from this period also feature subtle decorative touches such as wood inlay or burr walnut veneers on the top leaves.

What is a baby sutherland table?

A baby sutherland is a scaled-down version of the standard design, built with smaller dimensions suited for compact domestic spaces. These smaller variants often appear in burr walnut and were particularly popular during the nineteenth century for use as side or coffee tables.

Are Edwardian sutherland tables different?

Edwardian versions often reflect lighter stylistic revivals, such as Sheraton influences, alongside traditional Victorian forms. The materials remain consistent with earlier decades, though the construction sometimes favours simpler walnut or mahogany finishes.

How do I care for a wood sutherland table?

Protect the polished wooden surfaces from direct sunlight and excessive moisture by using coasters and mats. Regular dusting with a soft cloth helps preserve the natural sheen of the walnut, mahogany, or inlaid veneers.
