How were these jugs used historically?

These vessels served everyday domestic and tavern functions for storing, pouring, and serving liquids such as ale, wine, oil, and water. Larger flagons transported provisions, while smaller pots held condiments like mustard. Specialised forms like puzzle jugs provided entertainment during gatherings by requiring drinkers to solve the secret of the perforated neck.

How do I care for salt-glazed stoneware?

Keep these durable stoneware pieces away from sudden thermal shocks and harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the historic glaze and any attached metal components. Gentle dusting or wiping with a soft, damp cloth maintains the surface. Display them on stable surfaces where their weight and earthy tones can be appreciated safely.

How can I tell the period of a jug?

Dating relies on examining the potting technique, form, decorative style, and any workshop stamps or silver hallmarks. Seventeenth-century pieces often display distinctive German or Fulham characteristics, while Victorian examples frequently show Doulton Lambeth branding or Arts and Crafts motifs. Changes in handle attachment and rim mounts also offer clues to the era of manufacture.

Why do some jugs have silver rims?

Silver collars and hinged lids were added to protect vulnerable ceramic rims from chipping during heavy use or to elevate the status of the vessel. Silversmiths often fitted these mounts to Georgian and Victorian stoneware pots. These additions sometimes carry hallmarks that help date the exact year of the metalwork.
