How were brass mounted blanket chests used originally?

These chests served officers, merchants, and travellers as secure containers for clothing, valuables, and blankets during long voyages. Their robust construction protected contents from moisture and rough handling. Over time, many transitioned from functional transport trunks to domestic storage furniture within colonial and European households.

What woods are commonly found in these chests?

Makers utilised dense timbers that could endure variable climates, most notably camphorwood, teak, oak, and padouk. Camphorwood was especially favoured for its pleasant aroma and insect-repellent properties. English examples more frequently employ native oak or walnut, while colonial and trade pieces utilise exotic hardwoods.

How do I care for a camphorwood chest?

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying and splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply a suitable furniture wax to nourish the surface. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that might damage the original finish or tarnish the brass mountings.

Can I use a campaign chest as a coffee table?

Their flat lids and sturdy proportions make these chests a practical height for placement before a sofa. They provide hidden storage for living room blankets and books while anchoring the room's decor. Ensure any glass top used for protection rests on rubber bumpers to avoid marking the antique wood.

How do I distinguish a Victorian trunk from an eighteenth-century piece?

Eighteenth-century examples often display simpler iron or brass corner reinforcement and heavier timber construction, such as oak or walnut. Victorian pieces frequently incorporate mass-produced brass hardware, camphorwood, and dense stud decoration. Examination of the dovetail joints, nail types, and lock mechanisms helps clarify the period of manufacture.
