What is a brass mesh fireplace screen used for?

These screens serve primarily to catch stray sparks and embers flying from an open fire, protecting flooring and furnishings. They also act as a decorative addition to the fireplace during warmer months when the hearth is not in active use.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure the width and height of your fireplace opening to ensure the screen covers the entire hearth area adequately. Consider whether you need a flat single panel or a folding multi-section design to accommodate your hearth shape.

What are nursery fenders?

Nursery fenders are taller, enclosed protective barriers originally designed to keep young children away from hot fireplace grates. They often feature a sturdy brass top rail and wraparound wire mesh panels for all-round safety.

How do I tell Victorian screens from French styles?

Victorian screens often prioritise practical wire mesh construction with straightforward brass frames or simple top rails. French revival pieces, such as Rococo or Empire styles, showcase ornate gilt bronze castings, scrolling motifs, and elaborate decorative crests.
