What is a black pine coffer?

A black pine coffer is a wooden storage chest made from pine and finished in dark or black paint. These pieces were utilised for household storage, travel, and trade. They serve as practical storage items today while adding historical character to a room. Their dark painted surfaces suit both traditional and contemporary interiors.

How old are these chests?

The pieces listed span the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with Victorian examples and earlier folk art items frequently appearing. Construction methods and materials help indicate their age. Craftsmanship from these periods often displays hand-cut joints and forged iron hardware. Each era brought distinct decorative touches to the painted finishes.

Where were they used?

These chests served various roles in homes, aboard ships, and on military campaigns. Seamen, travellers, and tradesmen relied on them for secure transport. Domestic settings utilised them as blanket boxes, fireside log bins, and entryway storage. Their robust build allowed them to function in demanding environments.

How do I care for the painted surface?

Maintain the painted pine by dusting it regularly with a dry cloth and avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Preserving the original finish requires gentle handling and stable indoor conditions. Wax polishes should only be used if appropriate for the specific type of paint finish.
