What is a cold-painted bronze?

Cold-painted bronze refers to a sculpture finished with paint applied without kiln firing. This method preserves fine surface detail on small animal figures. Collectors look for remaining traces of this fragile coloration on birds and dogs from early twentieth-century workshops.

How do I identify Art Deco animal figures?

Art Deco animal figures feature streamlined silhouettes and geometric bases. Panthers and hounds dominate this design vocabulary. These sculptures frequently pair dark patinated metal with contrasting black or multi-coloured marble plinths.

Why are some figures mounted on marble?

Marble bases provide necessary weight and balance for heavy metal sculptures. They also offer a clean architectural frame for the animal form. Most Art Deco panthers and stags utilise thick marble plinths to ground the dynamic composition.

What is the animalier style?

Animalier describes nineteenth-century sculpture dedicated to accurate animal anatomy and movement. French workshops excelled in producing these realistic bronzes. Works range from domestic spaniels to powerful jaguars captured in motion.
