How were antique wood wall lights used?

These fixtures mounted to drawing room and hallway walls to illuminate interiors before electric lighting became widespread. Candles placed in the arms reflected against mirrored backplates to maximise the spread of light. Today, many owners adapt them for low-wattage electricity while retaining the historic candle tubes and drip pans for authenticity.

How do I tell Florentine wall lights apart?

Florentine pieces from the early twentieth century typically showcase carved leaf and scroll work finished in bright giltwood. They frequently appear as matched pairs or sets with twin, triple, or four-arm configurations. Earlier eighteenth-century Italian sconces display deeper hand-carving and distinct regional variations in the gesso and wood structure.

Can I wire these wall lights for electricity?

Most antique wood wall lights can be professionally converted to house internal wiring for modern wall power. Electric lamp holders are discreetly fitted into the original candle sockets to preserve the exterior appearance. Consult a qualified electrician to ensure the wooden backplates and arm fittings support safe electrical installation.

What periods do these wall lights span?

The current selection spans from the eighteenth century through the Victorian era up to the 1930s. Pieces from the 1920s and 1930s often reflect a revival of Florentine and Baroque design traditions. Earlier nineteenth-century examples display heavier hand-carved wooden construction with traditional gesso and leaf finishes.
