What were antique wall brackets used for?

These shelves originally held mantel clocks, heavy ceramic vases, bronze figures, or small candelabra to elevate decorative objects off tables and standard furniture. In period interiors, they also served architectural functions as structural supports beneath projecting cornices or structural beams.

How do I hang a heavy wall corbel?

Most antique corbels feature integrated iron strapwork, screw holes, or keyhole plates built directly into the back wooden or iron mounting surface. Ensure you anchor the bracket directly into brickwork or wooden wall studs using appropriate fixings to support the weight of the shelf and any displayed items.

How can I tell a Victorian bracket from an 18th century one?

Eighteenth-century examples generally display deeper hand-carved tool marks, heavier timber sections, and more restrained architectural proportions compared to later revivals. Victorian and later nineteenth-century pieces often embrace exuberant Rococo or Baroque revivalism, sometimes incorporating mass-produced cast elements or machine-tooled details alongside hand finishing.

Are these shelves sold as single items or pairs?

You will find both individual brackets and matching pairs listed across different periods and materials. Pairs are particularly common among decorative wooden and porcelain examples intended to frame a mirror or window. Single brackets frequently appear as salvaged architectural elements or standalone display consoles.
